This are the tools I use in my daily job as a webbby. If you know other tools that are free and that can replace this ones, please let me know.

Build html, CSS and Javascript

  1. Aptana Studio - Html, Css and Javascript editor
  2. Kompozer - Simple WYSIWYG web html+css editor
  3. Firebug - Experiment and debug in webpages (Firefox extension)
  4. Pixel Perfect - Firebug extension to help the translation to html (Firefox extension)
  5. Page speed - Firebug extension to evaluate the page speed (Firefox extension)
  6. Web developer - Experiment and debug in webpages (Firefox extension)
  7. YUI: CSS Grid builder - Start building templates
  8. YAML Builder - Template builder
  9. CSS3 Please - How to implement some new CSS3 tricks in different browsers

Browsers

  1. Firefox - The second most used browser in the world. Gecko engine. Excellent use of extensions
  2. Chrome - Lightweight and fast browser
  3. Opera - Fast, complete, full features and respects the web standards
  4. Safari - Very good browser with webkit engine. In Linux I use Midori and Konqueror as replacements.

File transfer

  1. Cyberduck - My Mac OS sFTP program.

Version control

  1. Bazaar - Revision control program, it can be easily use in your own computer.
  2. Subversion - One of the most popular revision control softwares in use today. I use it to access some software repositories and to publish, but not for individual work.
  3. Rapid SVN - Revision control program for subversion repositories.

Graphics and video

  1. Gimp - Edit your photos. Almost as good as Photoshop.
  2. Inkscape - Draw and make the design for websites.
  3. Scribus - Excellent PDF creation tool, both for the web and to print.
  4. Pencil project - Create wireframes
  5. Typetester - Select your fonts.
  6. ffmpeg - Create .flv video files form .mov's or other video formats
  7. ffmpeg2theora - Create .ogv video files that Firefox and Chrome can show
  8. Handbreak - Other conversions

Color

  1. Kuller - From Adobe.
  2. Generator - Another color generator.
  3. Color pallete generator - Generate colours from images.
  4. SwatchSpot - Generate random color swatches to get inspiration for your design projects.

Hosting companies

  1. Nearlyfreespeech - Great supporter service and you pay what you use. They use a cluster-type server that allows scalable solutions with a constant speed
  2. Dreamhost - Not the cheapest, but it has many interesting features at a higher price than Nearlyfreespeech
  3. Blogger and Wordpress.com - Your blog for free. On new blogs I use a regular hosting company and Wordpress.
  4. Blip.tv - Video hosting.

  1. SWF tools - Create very simple flash files. pdf2swf is my favourite
  2. Userstyles - Firefox extension that allows you to modify the CSS of any site or URL
  3. Builtwith- Google Chrome extension to detect technologies behind a website
  4. Aviary Screen Capture - Google Chrome or Firefox extension to quickly create and annotate screenshots
  5. Font-face generator - Converts fonts to .eot and prepare them to use on the web with font-face
  6. ttf2eot - Another tool to convert fonts from .ttf to .eot, so that they can work with all browsers with font-face

  1. Mamp or Xamp - Install a development server on your computer.

  2. Yahoo Base CSS - Reduce the differences between rendering in different browsers

  5. IE7-js - Library to help IE7 behave more like a standard compliant browser

Content Management Systems

  1. Drupal - This is a very complete system to build on-line communities with thousands of members. Lots of features with the basic package and hundreds of extra functionalities with the extra modules. Can be quite complex, if you just want a basic website edited by a very small group.
  2. SPIP - An excellent choice to create an e-zine or an online newspaper, edited by a community of writers.
  3. Moodle - E-learning CMS. One of the best I've ever tried. It is a create community tool as well.
  4. Wordpress - The best blog CMS. Many free plugins and templates. Check also Wordpress MU if you want to create lots of blogs, like for example in an university
  5. Tiki Wiki - A very powerfull CMS to build Intranets. Tons of features, not just a wiki, as the name suggests.
  6. Dokuwiki - One of the best wiki's around to build a medium website or Intranet.
  7. Mediawiki - The software that runs Wikipedia. It takes a long time to configure, but it's an excellent choice to build wikipedia-like websites
  8. Dotproject - Project management on-line
  9. PhpBB3 - Build an online forum. Very good and stable package
  10. PyroCms - Easy to use content management system, great for small or mobile web sites
  11. Mailman - Build mail lists (For simple mail-lists I prefer Google or Yahoo Groups)

  1. Google Analytics - A service by Google
  2. Piwik - Open source alternative to Google, less features but you own the data
  3. Awstats - Statistics tool based on server logs

  1. Webmaster tools - Google Tools to improve your results in Google
  2. Site Explorer - Yahoo Tools to improve your results in Yahoo
  3. Google Adwords - Find out which words to use.
  4. Trafic estimator - How many visitors will come by your chosen keywords?

Social networks

  1. Facebook - One of the most popular social networks now.
  2. Twitter - Most famous microblogging platform
  3. Flickr - Focused on photos and small videos, but very useful and engaged community
  4. Identi.ca - Microblogging platform that uses Open Source software. Less users but an activist community and more tools than twitter

Tools

  1. Ping.fm - Tool to post short updates to several social networks
  2. Friendfeed - Create groups from RSS feeds and other data sources

Operating systems & support software

  1. Virtualbox - Run different OS'es in your computer. Ideal to test your websites
  2. Ubuntu or Linux Mint - Very easy to use Linux operating system.
  3. Debian - If know the basics of Linux, the performance of Debian 5 is astonishing. It's great to use in old machines with less memory and slower processors. If you don't know anything about Linux, start by Ubuntu.
  4. Live CD - Sometimes I need a live cd to test websites: Knoppix, Dynebollic, Slax (it's hard to choose). Recently I'm using Virtualbox with Windows 7 and Linux Mint.

Other (Desktop)

  1. MacPorts - If you use a Mac, you have to try Macports. Install most Linux open-source apps in the Mac.
  2. Freemind - Mindmaps. Used to plan and brainstorm
