Advertising can be very beneficial to bands, when done correctly, but when done incorrectly it's a total waste of money. Unlike most businesses, bands usually don't have much money budgeted for advertising, so

Here are three types of advertising tools that have proven to be very beneficial to bands, and why your band should consider them.

1. Internet ads. Ads on websites like Facebook and Google can help your band out if they're used properly--key term, being, of course, used properly. If you buy a Google or Facebook ad campaign and simply funnel traffic to your website, you're not going to get a whole lot of return on your investment. Use an interesting ad to refer users to a page on your band's website that encourages action; a page that offers an mp3, a free clip, etc., then prompts the listener to join a mailing list, or a 30 second sample of a track and a link to buy it on iTunes. Otherwise, your targeted audience will simply stop by, say, "huh, this band's kind of interesting, " and move off of your website to never be heard from again, costing you a few cents in the process.

2. Press releases. Press releases are the easiest, fastest way to get coverage in music magazines, radio stations, etc. A well written press release can be invaluable to bands. Use a service like OnlineGigs.com to find relevant people to fax your press release to, and use it to announce shows and new records. Don't send out too many press releases to the same people, or they'll ignore them, and try to make your press releases well written and interesting or funny to increase the chances of coverage. Include your band's name and all of your contact information on the bottom of every press release.
